With more than 90 percent of his clients in the transportation industry, whether its a traditional trucking operation or a specialty niche like tow trucks, you could say that Ken Vos enjoys chasing wheels. And although he wears a suit, Ken isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

“Coming from a family of mechanics and working as one myself for many years, I’ve got a little motor oil running in my veins,” he explained. “My clients take comfort in the fact that I know the issues facing their industry.”

While Ken was a mechanic at a car dealership in Evergreen Park, he asked his brother-in-law Glenn Horton what he needed to do to get a job with The Horton Group.

“I don’t think Glenn thought I was serious at first, but when I came back with my CPCU, he hired me on the spot,” Ken said with a smile.

CPCU, or Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, is a professional designation recognized as one of the highest educational achievements in the insurance business. And since 1992, Ken has been showing Horton clients that he knows a lot more than just carburetors.

“A lot of business owners I meet with don’t fully understand how loss prevention and claims advocacy can make them more profitable,” Ken explained. “For example, it can make smart business sense to implement an incentive-based safety program. There are a host of different approaches our clients can take to control their exposure to risk.”

Ken and his dedicated support staff work extraordinarily hard to maintain their valued client relationships. Ken feels his business principles are grounded in trust and integrity.

“I’m very honest with the people I meet,” Ken said. “If your plan is in good shape, I’ll tell you. If you’re overinsured, I’ll tell you. If your plan is in ruins, I’ll tell you. That’s just the way I do business.”
